This is one of the most bold works I've written so far, where I allowed my characters to experience consequences head-on. I naturally avoid conflict in real life, and when I write, I tend to keep my characters safe from true dilemmas. A smart character in Zero Gravity has realized that she was not as strong as she has hoped in the midst of her most hated person. Does her actions bring her the justice she's looking for? As a bonus, I was honorably mentioned (for the first time) as the author of this 750 word short story from the Still collection.
I was standing at a bus stop to go home for the day, and my mind was wandering around. I started thinking about how finding your partner for life can involve a lot of luck in terms of crossing paths. A coffee shop, a party, a grocery store. You don't know when it will happen. But what if you had a way of telling which person is your soulmate and which one isn't, which removes any question marks you have in your love life? This main character has the wisdom given from the oldest thing in the universe, yet, the wisdom feels too certain. Too restricted. In this 635 word short story from the Our Town collection, what strength and courage would it take to go against destiny?
Published in the short story collection The Way Through is one of my proudest work so far. I was inspired by the division of politics in the Western world, but wanted to stay away from parties and labels in order to focus on the core lessons. This short story explores another dystopian world, one where everything is binary. The main character feels comfortable in the predictability and neat little boxes, until an unusual gift breaks his view. What if the binary view is wrong, inaccurate? How does one react to that? Is there a right reaction? Explore the questions in Black or White, a 750 word short story written in troubled times.
